Apple confirmed yesterday what many of us have suspected for several years: that the Mac is no longer its focus.
In a throwaway remark that was almost lost among the endless demonstrations of Lion and iOS 5 features, Steve Jobs proclaimed: ‘We’re going to demote the PC and the Mac to just be a device.’ And, to underline that, in red, with several asterisks either side, Mac OS X became just OS X. Apple has given Mac OS X developers an updated preview version of Lion to test. Codenamed Build 11A419, the new preview version reportedly comes with several warnings.
Among those are notes that Thunderbolt devices are not fully supported, problems with NTFS volumes and playback of videos purchased from the iTunes Store on 2011 MacBook Pros.
Apple also warned developers that the new Recovery HD feature in Lion won’t work on unsupported partitions. And that iPhoto 9 will crash in some circumstances.
