Facebook and Twitter used in $7m stock fraud

Facebook and Twitter were used to tout stocks in a classic “pump and dump” fraud of about $7 million that was uncovered during a cocaine-trafficking probe. The Manhattan US Attorney’s office said more than 15 websites, Facebook pages, and Twitter feeds were used to “defraud the investing public into purchasing stocks that were being manipulated by participants in the conspiracy”.

The US Department of Justice has reached a settlement with six Silicon Valley firms that will bring an end to an agreement not to poach each others’ employees.
