No competition for iPad in the run up to Christmas says Gartner

The iPad’s dominance of the tablet market will continue for the rest of this year, according to research firm Gartner.

In a report published today, the company predicted that the iPad would have 73.4% of the market in 2011. That’s a reduction of only 10% on last year, despite a significant increase on the number of tablets available to customers.

Adobe helps developers put Flash content on iPad and iPhone

Adobe has announced an update to Flash Media Server which will allow Flash content to be streamed to iOS devices.

Flash Media Server 4.5 repackages audio and video content in real time and changes the protocol, to, say, HTTP Dynamic Streaming, to suit the target device. This, says Adobe, will allow ‘businesses to use the same media and live streams to deliver full adaptive bit-rate experiences to platforms supporting Flash, as well as Apple devices, including iPad and iPhone.’

United Airlines is to give an iPad to each of its 11,000 pilots over the next few months as a replacement for paper flight manuals. United, which merged with Continental Airlines last year, hopes that the move will make it easier and quicker for pilots to access real-time information.

Google finally steps-in to defend developers against Lodsys

Google has filed a request with the USPTO to ask it to re-examine two patents held by intellectual property firm, Lodsys. It has asked for an assessment on whether the patents at the heart of the dispute between Lodsys and app developers are valid.

Google senior vide president and general counsel, Kent Walker told Wired.com: ‘We’ve asked the US Patent Office to reexamine two Lodsys patents that we believe should never have been issued. Developers play a critical part in the Android ecosystem and Google will continue to support them.’

Google accuses Apple of ‘hostile, organised campaign against Android’

Google has attacked Apple, Microsoft, and Oracle for imposing what it calls a patent ‘tax’ on Android customers.

In a post on the Official Google Blog, David Drummond, the company’s senior vice president and chief legal officer, said that Android’s success had ‘yielded something else: a hostile, organized campaign against Android by Microsoft, Oracle, Apple and other companies, waged through bogus patents.’
