Huge demand for Apple’s iPad 2 has led one long-time Apple watcher, Needham & Co. analyst, Charlie Wolf, to increase his projected 2011 sales figures by 50%.

In a research note entitled ‘AAPL: Shock and Awe,’ Wolf told investors that he had revised his forecast from 20 million to 30 million units for 2011 and from 30 million to 40 million units for 2012.

‘Attempting to forecast the growth trajectory of a new category of computers is difficult, if not perilous. However, the launch of the iPad 2 so far exceeded our expectations that it was evident our 2011 and 2012 shipment forecasts were dramatically low,’ wrote Wolf.

Apple started taking orders for the iPad 2 on its UK online store early this morning, but by then queues had already started to form outside its retail outlets.

The new iPad doesn’t go on sale in the shops until 5pm this afternoon, but eager customers, perhaps frustrated by the several-week waiting time on the online store, have been camping out overnight in front of Apple’s London Regent Street and Covent Garden stores.

Sales of the iPad 2 in the few days since its launch could be as high as one million, according to analyst Brian White, of Ticonderoga Securities. White told investors that ‘he would not be surprised’ to see sales of one million in the first weekend. The original iPad took 28 days to sell that many. White’s analysis was based on demand for the new iPad at Apple retail stores and the fact that the company is quoting a delay of two to three weeks on online orders.

Apple is in negotiations with major record companies to give iTunes customers greater flexibility in the way they listen to the music they buy, according to Bloomberg. The new service would also allow multiple downloads to different devices linked to the same iTunes account, meaning users could download the same tracks to their computer, iPhone, and iPad at no additional cost.
