Apple’s environmental credentials have again been called into question after the company was listed by Greenpeace as the least environmentally-friendly cloud computing businesses.

In a report entitled ‘How Dirty is your Data?’, Greenpeace listed major Internet businesses which rely on data centres to provide cloud computing services. Firms such as Akami, Amazon, Facebook, and Google were ranked according to the amount of energy their data centres consume and the proportion of that consumption which is generated from coal and nuclear sources.

Apple announces record sales and profits…again

Apple has announced that it made $5.99 billion in its fiscal second quarter, which ended on 26 March. That’s an increase of 95% on the previous year. It recorded record revenue for the quarter, of $24.67 billion, an increase of 83% on the previous year.

Contributing to the record figures were Mac sales of 3.76 million, up 28% year-on-year, and iPhone sales of 18.65 million, more than double the sales of a year ago. iPad sales were 4.7m for the quarter, down on the previous quarter due to difficulties supplying enough iPad 2 units to meet demand. iPod sales were 17% down on last year, at just over nine million.

Apple and Samsung in legal battle

Apple has issued legal proceedings in California against one of its component suppliers, Samsung. The court filing on April 15 alleges that several of the company’s Android phones and tablets, including the Nexus S, Epic 4G, Galaxy S 4G, and the Galaxy Tab, infringe on Apple’s intellectual property.

Apple boosts iTunes with order for twelve petabytes of storage

Apple has ordered twelve petabytes of storage from hardware and software provider, Isilon Systems, according to StorageNewsletter.com.

The storage will be used to host iTunes video content, according to the report. Apple’s order came to light via a source at storage giant, EMC which is in the process of acquiring Isilon Systems.

EMC is best known to Mac users as the parent company of Iomega, VMWare, and Mozy.
