EyeTV for iPhone makes Elgato's TV software more versatile with remote scheduling. It also streams video to your iPhone with little hassle, thanks to the free My EyeTV service. You can browse the TV guide, watch live TV or previously recorded shows over a wifi connection, and schedule new recordings on the spot. Previously, you'd need a £14.90 Tvtv subscription to do the latter, and EyeTV checked new schedules no more than once an hour. However, we had problems with our Mac going to sleep - the app was unable to wake it, so bear
You'll need a router with UPnP and Nat-PMP, which enable the iPhone and Mac software to talk without any complex configuration. We used a NetGear DG834Gv5 router and only had to switch on those settings to get it to work. Most setup takes place in the Mac software and involves enabling checkboxes and signing up for My EyeTV, a go-between that connects the app to your home network. Thankfully, you can lock down access with a pin code. When used with EyeTV Diversity, the app uses the first tuner so anyone watching at home must ensure they use the other one. EyeTV is worth the price for remote scheduling. It really needs a search bar like the one in the Mac version, and you can't browse the guide while watching video, but the quality over a fast 3G and broadband link is good enough. Even noticeable compression artefacts won't stop you tuning in to check how your football team is doing. For more iPhone app review like this, check out Know Your Mobile. By Alan Stonebridge
