'Special event' rumours grow 10:57AM, Thursday 6th October 2005
The two most credible sources of reliable Mac rumours and inside information are offering markedly different accounts of what Apple will unveil at its 'special event' next week.

AppleInsider is convinced that the company will fulfill expectations and unveil a video iPod, thinner than the current iPod colour models and sporting a smaller click wheel to make room for a larger display. Initially content will be limited to music videos and 'other short video content' as part of a 'major update' to the iTunes Music Store.

There is also some talk of a video-enabled version of Airport Express that would enable the wireless streaming of video around the home.

the event will not be so special. There will be an 80GB iPod but no video player. Apple will also unveil faster Power Macs and PowerBooks, with DDR2 memory and more powerful processors. At least one of the Power Macs will have the PowerPC 970MP dual-core chip while the PowerBooks will have higher-resolution displays.

The website says that although a video iPod is being developed, Apple sees little point in releasing it until users can import DVDs as easily as CDs can be loaded onto an iPod via iTunes.

Both websites are currently facing legal action from Apple for allegedly leaking trade secrets.

Yesterday the BBC 6 Music - a DAB and Internet radio station - claimed that a video iPod would be unveiled in London on the same day as the San Francisco special event.

'Apple is set to unveil a new video iPod at the BBC Television Centre in London,' it reported. 'The company is expected to reveal details of the new MP3 and video player as well as video bundles to be available from the company's iTunes stores.'

The report has since been removed from the 6 Music website.
