Satellite company talks up radio iPod deal 11:45AM, Friday 27th May 2005
A satellite radio company has revealed that it has held talks with Apple, though Mel Karmazin, CEO of Sirius Satellite Radio said no deal has been done.

Karmazin told shareholders that he had dinner this week with his opposite number at Apple, Steve Jobs, and other executives but cautioned that this did not mean that a radio-enabled iPod, or similar device, is only around the corner.

He said that although the technology is 'easy', there are other problems to overcome, not least what the effect would be on Sirius's other business and how they would split profits from the sales of devices and subscriptions. But he told shareholders not to worry.

'If we don't do a deal, our current business plan is just fine,' Karmazin said, which suggests that he is not desperate to do a deal.

Sirius is the number two satellite radio company in the US. The largest, XM, has also held talks with Apple and other player manufacturers, but said that it is not a priority.

'Generally, our current focus is on home entertainment,' director of product marketing Phil Whitworth told TMO.
