O2 to text tweets 11:57AM, Tuesday 14th July 2009
O2 has announced that from August its mobile customers will be able to get free SMS text alerts from Twitter.

Subscribers will also be able send and reply to tweets by text, though that won’t be free. The cost will come out of their tariff or charged at the standard network rate.

O2 already has agreements O2 with Facebook and Bebo, the former proving particularly popular. Over 12 million messages from Facebook are received by its users every month.

“We believe that mobile will soon become the most popular way of accessing social networking sites, giving real time access to tweets and status updates wherever you are,” said Antony Douglas, head of content at O2.

The agreement with O2 in the UK will form a framework for future agreements in other countries between Twitter and Telefónica, O2’s parent company.
