Officers from the Metropolitan Police arrested seven men and three women following a joint investigation with the FBI.
The Met says that the gang had made several songs which were then uploaded to the iTunes Store and Amazon MP3. They then used 1,500 stolen credit cards to download the songs thousands of times, spending some $750,000 and subsequently receiving royalties estimated at around $300,000.
Detective chief inspector Terry Wilson said that the capture of the gang was a significant step for the Met’s e-crime unit, which was setup just a year ago.
“This has been a complex investigation to establish what we believe to be an international conspiracy to defraud Apple and Amazon,” he said. “This investigation, with its national and international dimension, exemplifies why we have set up this national response to e-crime.”
He added that by working closely with the FBI, the unit is, “making it more risky for criminals who seek to exploit the internet and commit e-crime across national borders.”
