On 21 October 2008, Commission officials accompanied by their counterparts from the national competition authorities turned up unannounced to look for evidence of that the companies may have violated EC Treaty rules prohibiting practices such as price fixing, customer allocation and the exchange of commercially sensitive information.
The companies, which have not been names, make chips hat are used for the production of smart cards, such as mobile phone SIM cards, bank cards and identity cards.
The Commission stresses that the inspections are are a preliminary step in investigations into suspected cartels and do not mean that the companies are guilty of anti-competitive behaviour.
