Amazon opens UK downloads store
1:06PM, Wednesday 3rd December 2008
Without fanfare, Amazon has brought its MP3 downloads store to the UK.
Selling albums for as little as £3 and songs from 59p, the Amazon store is sure to prove a welcome alternative to the market leader iTunes, as well as other UK operators such as eMusic and 7Digital. Whether it will maintain these low prices remains to be seen, given that it must be making a loss, charging £3 for a chart topping such as Take That’s The Circus.
All tracks are MP3 and therefore DRM-free and are variable bit rate encoded at an average of 256Kb/sec. Album art is included.
Free software is provided which will automatically add tracks to an iTunes library if required.
