QuickTime breaks After Effects rendering

Apple's latest QuickTime update is causing major problems for users of After Effects, Adobe's motion graphics and video effects software.
Adobe forums report that once QuickTime 7.4 is installed After Effects reports an error ever time it tries to render a movie: "After Effects error: opening movie - you do not have permission to open this file (-54)".

Users solved the problem by reverting to QuickTime 7.3 - see the Apple Discussions thread - though that is incompatible with the latest version of iTunes. Other workarounds are suggested, which may or, as is often the case with "workarounds" may not work.
Apple has yet to respond to this or other issues arising from the QuickTime patch, including problems with MPEG movies.
