Visto promises "secure" corporate email for iPhone 8:50AM, Friday 29th June 2007
Mobile email provider Visto is planning to offer corporate email access to iPhone users.

The company announced that it will be enabling secure mobile access to current and legacy versions of both Microsoft Exchange and IBM Lotus Domino corporate messaging platforms. It said that access will be easy to implement and administer and will alleviate IT concerns regarding security and reliability.

"The iPhone and other devices to follow will continue to accelerate demand for secure mobile access to corporate data including email, contacts, calendar and other important information sources," said Brian Bogosian, president, chairman and CEO of Visto. "To be useful to business users, it must easily and securely provide access to corporate email - and that's where Visto adds value and functionality for end users as they consider the iPhone over BlackBerry, Symbian or Windows Mobile devices as their single converged device to support both their personal and business needs."

In fact, iPhone already has access to corporate email via its support for the IMAP standard. Claims that in addition to IMAP the iPhone will support Windows Exchange push-email through Microsoft's ActiveSync have been bolstered by a screenshot that shows an Exchange tab in the iPhone's email client. However the equivalent option has been provided in Apple's desktop Mail client for several years and simply provides an interface for connecting to Exchange via IMAP. There is nothing to suggest that the iPhone will be any different. And if it were surely Apple would have mentioned it - but the iPhone website claims support for the two industry standards of POP and IMAP.That does not stop Think Secret claiming that "iPhone will support Microsoft Exchange servers using ActiveSync". The same claim was made by a US journalist last week, without substantiation.
