Apple on course for record spring iPod sales 9:11AM, Thursday 21st June 2007
Apple remains on course to sell as many as 10 million Pods in the current quarter. Gene Munster's latest estimate suggests that Apple's media player sales could increase by almost a quarter since last spring.

Drawing on figures from NPD Group, the Piper Jaffray analyst told investors that Apple will sell between 9.5 million and 10.0 million iPods in the current quarter. The figure is lower than Munster's previous estimate of 10.5 million. A year ago Apple sold 8.1 million in the three months to the end of June.

"The 9.5 million - 10.0 million unit approximation is based on various assumptions and is an extrapolation of two months of data," Munster wrote. "When the third month of data is released, our analysis will likely lead to a slightly different iPod unit figure than what our analysis suggests based on the second

month of data, so we believe investors should supplement this data point with other information."

Munster made no new comment on projected iPhone sales, though he did warn first-day buyers to expect long queues. He said earlier this month that Apple could sell 45 million iPhones in 2009.

The analyst also discussed recent rumours concerning a new iMac design and a satellite navigation system.

"As we anticipated, the redesigned iMacs were not announced at last week's WWDC keynote," he said "However, we continue to expect iMacs with a new form factor by September."

He noted that Apple has not released an iMac update since September 2006, when it would normally refresh the line every six months or so.

Turning to a German magazine's report that Apple is developing a satnav system for Mercedes, Munster said "his seems far-fetched, the device could simply be an iPhone equipped with GPS, which is a feature we expect in 2009".
