AOL takes aim at IM abuse 3:18PM, Monday 1st November 2004
AOL has joined an initiative aimed at preventing abuse of instant messaging technologies.

The developer of AIM has signed up to the Messaging Anti-Abuse Working Group (MAAWG), a body looking into ways of preventing messaging abuse problems, including spam, viruses, forgery, fraud and other malicious attacks. Members include ISPs, telecoms carriers and other software developers, though not AOL's main IM rivals, Microsoft and Yahoo!. AIM technology is used by Apple's iChat IM client.

'America Online is committed to improving our customers' messaging experience. To do so, we must cooperate to find common solutions for eliminating spam and other unwanted communications and security threats,' said Carl Hutzler, director of AntiSpam Operations at AOL.
