Google abandons “successful” Nexus phone

by Simon Aughton on July 8, 2010

Google has decided not to make a second version of its Nexus Android phone, because the first was so successful.

Chief executive Eric Schmidt told the Telegraph that the company had only introduced the handset — manufactured on its behalf by HTC — to promote its Android platform.

“The idea a year and a half ago was to do the Nexus One to try to move the phone platform hardware business forward. It clearly did. It was so successful, we didn’t have to do a second one.”

Google won’t be repeating that success with the Chrome OS it is developing for netbook PCs, but Schmidt wouldn’t be drawn on Google’s tablet plans. But asked how the company would react to the success of the iPad, Schmidt said, “We don’t react”.

Google is one name on Jupiter Research’s summary of companies that have either released tablets, that have them in the pipeline, or are “rumoured” to be working on it, a number of which either use or plan to use Android.
