Twitter apologises for using real users in mocked-up tweets

by Kenny Hemphill on July 25, 2013

Twitter has removed part of a blog post from its website after it was criticised for using real user accounts to promote a new advertising service.

The original version of the post contained an image depicting tweets from users discussing an advert for a coffee bar. The users’ whose Twitter names were shown in the images hadn’t posted the tweets shown and weren’t aware their names were being used to promote a new Twitter advertising service.

‘An earlier version of this blog post included an image with mock tweets from real users of our platform,’ said Twitter on its marketing web page. ‘This was not OK. Once we became aware of this mistake, we took it down immediately. We deeply apologise to the three users included in the earlier images.’

The blog post promoted a new service which allows companies to promote TV commercials on Twitter.
