EE double 4G speeds in 12 cities and increases data allowances

by Kenny Hemphill on July 3, 2013

EE has responded to the imminent launch of competing 4G services from O2 and Vodafone by doubling the speed of its network in 12 cities.

Customers in Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Derby, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Nottingham and Sheffield, will now see average speeds of 24-30Mbits/sec and a top speed of up to 150Mbits/sec.

New customers will also benefit from increased data allowances if they sign up before 30 September. EE was criticised when it launched its 4G service last year, because customers on its lowest cost tariff were only given an allowance of 500MB per month. That tariff has now been reduced to £26/month while new customers on the £51/month plan will see an increase in their data allowance from 5GB to 20GB. EE’s other tariffs have also had an increase in their data allowance, though the jump isn’t quite as big.

Existing customers will have to sign a new contract with a more expensive monthly cost, in order to take advantage of the new data allowances.

EE also announced that customers can now use a total of five devices on one contract, allowing families with several mobile phones and tablets to share one contract.
