Following months of speculation, Microsoft has released a version of Office for iOS, but there’s no iPad version, it needs an Office 365 subscription, and it isn’t yet available in the UK.
Microsoft said in its announcement: ‘the iPhone app enables great Office content viewing and on-the-go content editing capabilities.’ Those viewing and editing capabilities extend only to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, there’s no Outlook or One Note in the iPhone app. One Note is available as a separate app.
Documents are stored in Microsoft’s Office 365 cloud storage, meaning they can be shared with other versions of Office, but also meaning that the first thing you need to do on launching the app is log into your Office 365 account.
Microsoft hasn’t said when or if it plans on launching an iPad version and recommends using its web apps on an iPad.
Office Mobile for iPhone is free for Office 365 subscribers, and Microsoft said it planned to roll out international versions over the next four-to-five days.
