Re-launched Google Maps hits top of iTunes chart

by Kenny Hemphill on December 13, 2012

Google’s Maps app, which popped up on the App Store in the early of hours of this morning, is already the number one most downloaded free app on the App Store.

A new version of Google Maps has been awaited by many users since the launch of iOS 6, when Apple replaced it as the default mapping app with its own tool.

The new Google Maps includes public transport directions, and spoken turn-by-turn navigation. There’s also live traffic information and Street View.

Google Maps currently only available for the iPhone, though an iPad version is expected soon.

Google said the new app was ‘designed from the ground up to combine the comprehensiveness and accuracy of Google Maps with an interface that makes finding what you’re looking for faster and easier.’
