Apple announces updated iTunes, iPods, and EarPods

Apple has overhauled iTunes, tightly integrating iCloud, improving the mini player, and allowing songs in playlists to be queued. The mini player now has a search bar, and artists can share photos with fans in a Gallery. Movies positions are saved across devices so you can pick watching on one device where you left off on another.

The new iPod nano, like the iPhone 5, is both thinner and taller than its predecessor. It has a Lightning connector and a Home button. The on-screen controls are large and designed to be easy to use without having to look at the screen. It comes in white, black, purple, green, blue, yellow, and red. There’s an FM tuner and support for widescreen video. There’s a built-in pedometer and the Nike+ app comes pre-installed.

Apple also announced an updated iPod touch. It has the same-sized, 4in, screen as the iPhone 5, and a Retina display. At 6.1mm, it’s the thinnest iPod touch Apple has ever made. It has an A5 processor, similar, though not identical, to the one in the iPhone 4S.

There’s an iSight camera too. It has many of the features of the iPhone 5′s camera, including 1080p video, image stabilisation, face detection, and panorama mode. The iPod touch also has AirPlay mirroring, Siri, and a wrist strap. And, for the first time, the iPod touch comes in multiple colours; black, silver, blue, yellow, and red.

Apple said it had spent three years improving the earphones included with its mobile devices and its new EarPods improved audio quality and have bigger, easier to use controls on the cable. The EarPods don’t fit into the ear canal, like many popular earbuds, but sit against the ear canal, like Apple’s original iPod earbuds. They come with the iPhone 5, new nano and touch, and are available as a standalone accessory immediately.

The iPod touch 32GB will cost £249, the 64GB £329, and the 4th generation model drops to £169 for 16GB and £199 for 32GB. The iPod nano 16GB is £129.
