Apple CEO Tim Cook took to the stage at the Wall Street Journal’s All Things Digital D10 conference yesterday to be interviewed by Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher.
The wide-ranging conversation covered everything from whether Apple will ever manufacture in the US again (‘I’d love to,’ said Cook) to the way in which the new CEO has led the company since the death of Steve Jobs (‘one of the saddest days of my life’), and the lawsuits in which it’s currently involved (‘a pain in the ass’).
The topic on most people’s minds, however, was the much-rumoured, Apple TV. When asked if Apple planned to produce a television set, Cook, predictably, responded with ‘I’m not going to answer that question.’ He did say, however, that ‘We’re going to keep pulling this string and see where it takes us. Many people would say “this is an area in their life that they aren’t pleased with.” They might not be pleased with many things about it. The whole TV experience. It’s an interesting area. We’ll have to see what we do. Right now our contribution is Apple TV.’
Cook told Mossberg and Swisher that he planned to ‘double down on secrecy’ within the company, but did hint at one or two things we can expect from Apple in the coming months. On Siri, he explained: ‘We have a lot of people working on this. You’ll be really pleased with the things you’ll see over the coming months… we’ve got some cool ideas about what Siri can do. We have a lot going on on this.’ And on Facebook: ‘we want to provide customers simple and elegant ways to do the things they want to do. Facebook has hundreds of millions of customers. So, anyone that has an iPhone or iPad, we want them to have the best experience with Facebook on those platforms. So stay tuned.’
