Next iPhone to have 4in screen says Wall Street Journal

by Kenny Hemphill on May 16, 2012

Apple has ordered 4in screens, believed to be for its next iPhone, from suppliers in Asia according to the Wall Street Journal.

‘The new screens measure at least 4 inches diagonally, the people said, compared with 3.5 inches on Apple’s latest model, the iPhone 4S. Production is set to begin next month, the people said. Analysts have predicted that the next iPhone will come out in the fall,’ reported the Journal.

That story was corroborated by another from Reuters which said that early production of the new screens had begin at LG, Sharp, and Japan Display Inc.

The report doesn’t detail the dimensions of the screen nor indicate its resolution. A recent report on iLounge, however, suggested that the next iPhone will be the same width as the 4S, but 10mm longer. That will mean a longer (or taller) screen with a different aspect ratio and resolution. It will also mean apps will have to be re-designed to accommodate the additional pixels.

Also expected in the new iPhone, according to iLounge is a new Dock connector which ‘will be a little larger than the bottom speaker or microphone hole on the iPhone 4/4S. It’s believed to have fewer pins than the prior 30-pin Dock Connector, perhaps only 16, and the shape of the hole is apparently closer to a pill shape than the prior rounded rectangle.’
