Apple launches new iPad with Retina Display and 4G wireless

by Kenny Hemphill on March 7, 2012

Tim Cook took to the stage in San Francisco today to announce a new iPad. Describing it as ‘amazing’, Cook explained that the new iPad has a Retina Display.

Demonstrating the new model, Apple marketing VP, Phil Schiller said ‘Photos are just going to look amazing on that gorgeous high-resolution display.’

The iPad’s resolution is 2048 x 1536 pixels: four times as many pixels as its predecessors.

The iPad has an ARM-designed, A5X processor and quad-core graphics.

There’s a new iSight camera too. It has a five-megapixel backside-illuminated sensor, five-element lens, infra-red filter, and face-detection.

The new iPad doesn’t get Siri, but does have voice dictation for documents and emails. ANd there’s support for the Long Term Evolution (LTE) wireless standard.

There will be two different versions of the iPad for the LTE networks of AT&T and Verizon. In the UK, most networks are trialling LTE, but the auction for the radio spectrum necessary to launch it publicly won’t happen until later this year. Networks don’t expect to launch LTE services in the UK until next year at the earliest.

The new iPad will have three capacity options; 16GB; 32Gb; and 64GB, with either 3G or Wi-Fi. It will be available in the UK on 16 March. Pricing starts at £399 for the 16GB Wi-Fi model.

Apple said it would also keep selling the iPad 2, with prices starting at £329.
