Apple offers cash for old Macs in UK re-use and recycling scheme

by Kenny Hemphill on January 17, 2012

Apple has extended its re-use and recycling programme for unwanted equipment to Europe.

The scheme allows you to send an old Mac, PC, iPhone, or iPad to Dataserv, the company Apple is using to run the scheme, and receive cash in return.

According to Apple’s recycling web page, Dataserv ‘will estimate the fair market value of your device.’ As with similar schemes, the payments offered are significantly below prices which could be achieved by selling the device on eBay. When we checked the price for a 2009 2GHz Core 2 Duo Mac mini, we were offered £94. The same machine currently sells on eBay for three times that amount.

If Dataserv decides that it can’t accept your computer, iPhone or iPad for re-use, Apple advises taking it to a local authority recycling point. If you buy a new Mac or display from an Apple retail store or Premium resellers, you can take your old computer and monitor there within 30 days for recycling.
