Spotify creates platform for apps

Spotify, the online music streaming service has announced a significant upgrade with the addition of apps.

The apps, built in HTML 5 and JavaScript, are accessed via an AppFinder which is listed in the left-hand sidebar of the Spotify application. Once added, Apps appear below the AppFinder and provide a gateway to content such as curated playlists, music news, and reviews. Currently, apps are available from The Guardian, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, LastFM and a handful of others.

Speaking at a launch event for the new platform, Spotify CEO and Founder Daniel Ek commented: ‘Once you take a look, you’ll see why we believe this is truly the beginning of something game-changing for digital music. We think this will lead to integrations that keep Spotify beautiful and simple, but layer in great musical experiences designed to be social and fun. It’s what our users have been asking us for.’

Spotify Platform is currently in beta, and a preview can be downloaded from Spotify’s website. The company said it expected the final version to be available in the coming days. The Platform is currently on available on the desktop, and not the mobile, versions of Spotify.
