Apple updates MacBook Pro range

Apple has updated its MacBook Pro range. The upgraded MacBook Pros have faster processors; 100MHz quicker on the 13in models and 200MHz on the 15in and 17in machines.

The graphics chips on the 15in and 17in models have been upgraded too. The entry 15in model now has an AMD Radeon HD 6750M with 512MB RAM, and the faster 15in and 17in machines have a Radeon HD 6770M with 1GB RAM.

Storage on the 13in MacBook Pros has been boosted to 500GB and 750GB.

In a break with recent custom, which has seen product refreshes occur on a Tuesday, following a period of several hours in which the online Apple Store is unavailable, the new Macs slipped onto the Store almost unnoticed.

Speculation about a new MacBook Pro range has increased in recent weeks. The last update to the range was in February and with the next generation of Intel’s mobile processors, code-named Ivy Bridge, not due until Spring, it was felt by some that Apple had to do something to ensure that the MacBook Pro remained competitive in performance terms.

The new MacBook Pros are available now and start at £999 for the 2.4GHz Core i5 13in model, running to £2099 for the 2.4GHz quad-core Core i7 17in model.
