Apple to hold iPhone 5 launch event on October 4

by Kenny Hemphill on September 21, 2011

Apple will hold a ‘big media event’ on October 4, according to All Things Digital. The Wall Street Journal blog reports that according to its sources, the event would be the scene for the launch of the iPhone 5.

While there have been a lot of conflicting reports about the exact timing of the event, including some that pegged it as taking place this month, AllThingsD had previously posted that the rollout of the iPhone 5 would be in October.

The event will also be the first major product launch since Tim Cook became CEO, replacing Steve Jobs. According to AllThingsD, Cook will host the event, unlike events during Jobs’ leaves of absence which were presented by Phil Schiller.

In addition to a new iPhone, the iPod line-up is due for a refresh and the event could see the launch of a white iPod touch. It is also likely to be the platform for an announcement on the availability of iOS 5, which is expected to be finalised at the end of this month, and for the launch of iCloud, Apple’s suite of online services which is set to replace MobileMe.
