Amazon opens Mac software download store

by Kenny Hemphill on May 26, 2011

Amazon has opened a Mac download store on its US website. Significantly, in view of Amazon’s dispute with Apple over the term ‘app store’, it’s simply called Mac Software Downloads.

Another store offering Mac games downloads has also been opened.

So far, the range of titles available on both stores is small, but the software store includes some well known applications, most notably Microsoft Office, Photoshop Elements 9, and Final Draft.

Titles on the games downloads store are equally sparse, though here there are also some notable titles, including Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Dragon Age 2, and Civilization 5.

MacUser’s games expert, Alan Stonebridge said ‘I’m not convinced I’d buy from Amazon’s store unless there’s a truly compelling benefit over buying direct from the publisher—fine if you’re not familiar with the market, of course—or the Mac App Store. Perhaps if the price was significantly discounted. For small utilities, I’d miss the update notifications from Apple’s store.’
