Apple has confirmed that it will ‘deliver a Mac OS X software update that will automatically find and remove Mac Defender malware and its known variants’ within days.
In a support document on its website, the company said the update would also ‘help protect users by providing an explicit warning if they download this malware.’
The support document goes on to detail the steps necessary to remove the malware, as well as providing advice on how to avoid installing it in the first place.
Apple came in for criticism last week after it emerged that it had instructed employees taking calls from Apple Care customers not to help them remove Mac Defender.
An internal memo for Apple Care support staff explained that:
AppleCare does not provide support for removal of the malware. You should not confirm or deny whether the customer’s Mac is infected or not.
The Apple support document didn’t specify a date when the update would be available, instead promising it in the ‘coming days.’
