Apple releases Mac OS X Lion Developer Preview 2

by Kenny Hemphill on March 31, 2011

Apple has given Mac OS X developers an updated preview version of Lion to test. Codenamed Build 11A419, the new preview version reportedly comes with several warnings.

Among those are notes that Thunderbolt devices are not fully supported, problems with NTFS volumes, and playback of videos purchased from the iTunes Store on 2011 MacBook Pros.

Apple also warned developers that the new Recovery HD feature in Lion won’t work on unsupported partitions. And that iPhoto 9 will crash in some circumstances.

Developers also got their hands on a new build of Lion Server. It has its own list of problems and doesn’t yet support Podcast Producer Server.

Mac OS X Lion was unveiled by Apple in October last year and the first developer preview released in February. Among its new features are; Launchpad, which Apple describes as ‘a new home for all of your Mac apps’; system-wide support for full screen viewing of applications; and Mission Control, which pulls together Exposé, Spaces, Dashboard and full-screen apps in one interface.

In addition, Mail has been overhauled, there’s a system-wide Auto Save feature, and Resume which allows you to restart a Mac or an individual application without having to save documents individually and the re-open them.

Lion is scheduled for release this summer and is expected to be a focus of Apple’s Wordlwide Developers Conference at the beginning of June.
