News Corporation’s iPad magazine app, The Daily, which debuted Apple’s new in-app subscriptions service, will launch in the UK in the next three months, according to the company’s Chief Digital Officer, Jonathan Miller.
Speaking at the Abu Dhabi Media Summit, Miller told attendees that The Daily would be available in western Europe ‘not too long from now.’ When pressed further, he conceded that that meant the first half of this year.
The company has said that there are no plans for a UK-specific version, according to PaidContent.org. Miller, a former chief executive of AOL, also told the audience in Abu Dhabi that The Daily will face a ‘moment of truth’ when the free trial period ends next week.
The Daily launched on 2 February and subscribers were initially given two weeks to try it for free. Problems with the app’s performance, however, led to News Corp. extending that trial for a further month. From next week, readers who want to subscribe will have to pay 99 cents a week or $39.99 per year.
The company has not released figures for subscribers, but reports estimate that around 5,000 people have already signed up for a year.
