Apple issues iOS 4.3 update with Personal Hotspot and Home Sharing

by Kenny Hemphill on March 10, 2011

Apple has released the latest version of iOS for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch. It includes the ability to use an iPhone 4 as a wifi access point for devices which don’t have a 3G connection.

In addition, iTunes Home Sharing allows an iTunes library stored on a Mac or TV to be accessed on an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch on the same wireless network.

The new operating system, demonstrated by Steve Jobs at last week’s iPad 2 launch, also has improvements to AirPlay, Apple’s media sharing technology. It can now stream video shot on an iPhone or iPad 2 and stored in the Photo Library to Apple TV. And AirPlay-enabled apps and websites can be shown full-screen on an HDTV.

The iPad’s side switch, which was originally an orientation lock and became a mute switch with iOS 4.2 can now be configured to control either function.

Safari has been boosted on iOS devices by the addition of a new Nitro JavaScript engine, which Apple says runs JavaScript up to twice as fast as in iOS 4.2.

They haven’t fixed the most annoying aspect…

Those irritating dialog boxes that tell you the network is lost or that a accessory is not compatible &c.

That network lost dialog box is my pet hate. It’s particularly frustrating if you happen to live on the edge of a signal area and regularly drop the connection. Or when you’re on a train travelling in and out of signal areas.
