Google bans itself from own search engine results after complaint

by Kenny Hemphill on March 9, 2011

Google has banned one of its own properties from the results on its search engine.

On Monday Google acquired British financial comparison site BeatThatQuote.com for a reported £37.7 million. On Tuesday, following a complaint from search engine optimisation company, SEOBook, the site was penalised and dropped out of sight in Google’s search engine rankings, according to Search Engine Land.

The complaints levelled against BeatThatQuote.com include using techniques like link buying and doorway pages, both of which contravene Google’s guidelines.

The site appears to be still present in Google’s index but is buried several pages deep for most search terms.

As you can see from the picture, it doesn’t even appear on the front page in the search results for its own name.
