iPad 2 “spotted” in New York

by Simon Aughton on February 3, 2011

Reuters claims to have seen the first concrete evidence that a new iPad is imminent.

A reporter for the news agency saw what appeared to be a working model of the next iPad — with a front-facing camera at the top edge of the glass screen. The device was spotted at a New York press conference to mark the release of News Corp’s new iPad newspaper, The Daily.

Reuters says that source with knowledge of the device confirmed its existence, adding that the final release model could have other features. Apple declined to comment.

The next version of Apple’s popular tablet computer is expected to be announced in the next few months, with a front-facing camera to make FaceTime video calls.

News Corp boss Rupert Murdoch unveiled The Daily, available to US iPad users who will pay for the “newspaper” using Apple’s new subscription payments mechanism. Apple said it had been working for a year to develop the new payments system, which will be made available to other publishers.
