Visa to debut iPhone payments app

Visa is preparing to introduce iPhone payments in partnership with two Turkish banks, ahead of a wider European rollout.

The credit card company has twinned an app with a hardware adapter that plugs into the dock connector, allowing iPhone users to make contactless payments from their handset.

“Our pilot projects around Europe clearly shows that there is a strong demand for mobile contactless payments by customers,” said Sandra Alzetta, head of Visa Europe’s innovation department.

“Consumers who use smart phones, like the iPhone, are more prone to early take on advanced payment technologies and therefore it was an appropriate target to begin with.”

A survey for Visa in Italy, Poland, Turkey and the UK found that 87% of iPhone users would be happy to attach an adapter to their phone in order to make mobile payments.

Visa is testing the system at its London offices, ahead of a planned UK launch.

Barclaycard announced last week that it will be offering contactless MasterCard payments in partnership with Orange and T-Mobile.
