App Store joins Twitter

by Simon Aughton on January 25, 2011

Apple has opened a new Twitter account for the iOS App Store, promising “featured apps, exclusive offers, and more…”.

So far, there’s been nothing in the way of exclusive offers, just three featured apps for whole food recipes, primate puzzles and a fitness club.

That pretty much reflects Apple’s low-key Twitter presence, which until now consisted of a couple of iTunes-related streams. The company’s biggest presence is through iTunes’ Ping, allowing Ping users to automatically tweet whenever they post, like or review on the social music service.

Amongst senior Apple executives, only marketing boss Phil Schiller is a public tweeter. Schiller mainly posts photos, taken with Instagram on his iPhone, though he does respond to questions.

Asked to name his favourite Mac, for instance, he said that he has “many favs, from the Mac SE/30 and PowerBook 500 to today’s iMac and MacBook Air”.

He also seems to have a thing for cars, listing his favourites as “Porsche 550, Lambo Miura, Aston Martin DB4 GTZ, Ford GT40, Auto Union Type D, T57S Atlantic, MB 300SL, Jag E-Type”.

In contrast, Scott Forstall, Apple’s head of iOS, has posted precisely nothing on his account, but has still amassed more than 36,000 followers, 11,000 more than Schiller.

ceoSteveJobs, on the other hand, is very loquacious — only it isn’t the Apple founder, CEO and chairman, but a spoof account. And one that is clearly labelled as parody, after Apple asked Twitter to ensure as much.
