Apple may be about to relax its rules on App Store pornography. Playboy-founder Hugh Hefner says that the magazine will soon be available, uncut, for the iPad.
“Big news! Playboy–both old & new–will be available on iPad beginning in March,” Hefner tweeted this morning.
Then, in response to questions, he added that, “Playboy on iPad will be uncensored” and “will include the whole magazine from the first issue to the latest.”
While this certainly entails a relaxing of Apple’s ban on “objectionable content”, it almost certainly doesn’t indicate that the ban will be lifted entirely — don’t expect Playboy to be followed by a rush of hardcore porn apps.
Hefner has not revealed how his magazine will be delivered, but it seems likely that it will be one of the first titles to use the new subscription-payment service that Apple was expected to introduce this month.
Reports now say that Apple has put the launch back a few weeks. It will debut with The Daily, a new, iPad-only newspaper published by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp.
