There are now more than two billion FireWire ports worldwide, with more applications and faster speeds ahead, the 1394 Trade Association has revealed.
FireWire features in wide range of PCs, storage systems, new generations of set top boxes, industrial and factory automation equipment, and professional audio systems, where reliable and versatile high-speed connections are required, the trade association said.

The 1394 group expects to see continued expansion in higher speed computing, storage and consumer electronics products, as well as growth in industrial applications. Key to expansion will be the first S1600 products operating at 1.6 Gigabit/second, due to be introduced this year.
That will be followed by S3200, 3.2Gb/sec towards the end of the year, Bassler added.
