Mac App Store opens today

by Simon Aughton on January 6, 2011

Apple’s new Mac App Store is scheduled to launch today, though UK Mac users will likely have to wait until this evening before they can try it out.

The Loop blog says that its sources indicate that the store will open in the US at noon Eastern Time. Assuming a simultaneous international release, that means the Mac App Store application should be available around 5pm.

Apple looks set to mark the store’s debut with the release of iWork ’11, a new version of the productivity software suite that comprises Pages, Numbers and Keynote, though the company hasn’t confirmed anything.

Among applications that are confirmed for the new store is the long-awaited “Tweetie 2”. The revamped software will be released as the official Twitter client, following the release of official iPhone and iPad clients based on Twitter’s acquisition of Tweetie last year.
