VAT rise hits Apple Store

by Simon Aughton on January 4, 2011

Apple has chosen not to absorb the VAT rise that went into effect today, with some peculiar prices as a result.

Apple TV goes up from £99 to £101, for instance, while Macs that were priced at £999 go over the £1,000 threshold — the entry-level, 13-inch MacBook Pro is now £1,020, likewise the cheapest, 21.5-inch iMac and the 11-inch, 128GB MacBook Air.

iPads now start at £439, not £429, while the lowest increase is saved for the iPod shuffle, now £1 more expensive at £40.

Apple has not commented on the decision to apply the VAT increase. UK sales tax rose from 17.5% to 20%.
