Apple deletes Wikileaks app

by Simon Aughton on December 21, 2010

Apple has pulled an iOS app that displayed the contents of the whistleblower’s latest disclosures.

The app charged $1.99 for access the embassy cable leaks that are now available for free from dozens of sites on the web. It first appeared on the App Store on 17 December but is no longer available.

Apple hasn’t explained its decision, which could prompt retaliation from the pro-Wikileaks hacktivists who recently attacked websites of other companies, including Visa and Mastercard, who had stopped supplying services to the whistleblowing site.

But judging by users’ comments, the app won’t be missed.

“Awful. Waste of money,” wrote Pierce Cohen.

“Do not buy!,” said Murdock1450. “This app is just a wrapper for the mobile web site. There is no access to the actual released documents. Twitter feed doesn’t count as up to date information.”
