Apple has added fully illustrated and ‘Enhanced’ books to iBooks, the ebook reader for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.
Illustrated titles include children’s books, cookbooks and art books, while the new enhanced volumes combine text and images with audio and video. Titles are sold through the iBookstore, which is built into the iBooks app.
The ability to offer colour books gives Apple a clear differentiation fromr Amazon, who’s market-leading Kindle reader has a text-friendly mono display.
Other changes in iBooks 1.2 include an option to organise books and PDFs into Collection, support for AirPrint printing of notes and PDFs (but not books), and a force-hyphenation option to improve readability.
