Apple patents fibre optic MagSafe

by Kenny Hemphill on December 3, 2010

Apple has been granted a patent by the US Patent and Trademark Office for a new MagSafe adaptor which integrates power and fibre optic data transfer in one connector and cable.

Drawings submitted with the patent application show a single MagSafe plug and cable connecting to a laptop at one end and an adaptor at the other. The box has sockets for DVI, USB, RJ45 and one described as ‘optical.’ There are power terminals fitted to one side of the box.

It’s possible that the ‘optical’ label could refer to Intel’s Light Peak technology which will carry video and data signals using the same protocol and have have a maximum data transfer rate of 10Gb/s.
