Apple sells 450K Beatles albums

by Simon Aughton on November 24, 2010

EMI has hailed the The Beatles’ digital debut as ‘a pretty amazing achievement’ after registering 450,000 album downloads in the first week of the band’s music becoming available on iTunes.

The record company added that iTunes users had also bought more than two million individual tracks.

Chart placings, however, were not so impressive. In the UK, Hey Jude crept in at number 40 in the singles chart and, while the album rundown featured two compilations of the band’s singles, none of the studio albums figured. The story was much the same in the US.

The Beatles’ total sales since they released their first record in 1962 are estimated at between 600 million and one billion records.
