Apple puts Sim plans on hold

by Simon Aughton on November 24, 2010

The next iPhone will not include the integrated Sim technology currently under development at Apple.

The Financial Times reports that, according to its sources, next year’s iPhone will continue to use removable Sim cards, but Apple hasn’t given up on plans to embed Sim technology into future versions of the phone.

Earlier this week, The Financial Times reported that mobile operators had threatened to stop subsidising Apple’s smartphone if they lose control over Sims, the chip-bearing cards that determine the network to which a phone connects.

Their chief concern is that embedded technology would make it easier for consumers to switch networks, increasing operators’ costs while forcing them to offer shorter contracts.
