Apple will release the latest major software update for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch later today. iOS 4.2’s headline features are Find My Phone, and wireless audio and video streaming.
Find My Phone, a feature previously only available to MobileMe subscribers, enables you to locate a lost or stolen iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. You can send a message asking for its return, lock the device and choose to wipe its contents.
With the update installed, iOS devices will be able to send audio to speakers connected to an AirPort Express, as well as some hi-fi units. They’ll also be able to stream both audio and video to the Apple TV. iOS 4.2 also bring wireless printing, albeit in a very limited form,
iOS 4.2 also unifies the software running on all three of Apple’s mobile devices, which means iPad users can now enjoy multitasking and folders.
iOS 4.2 is compatible with iPad, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, second- and third-generation iPod touches (late 2009 models with 32GB or 64GB) and the new iPod touch.
Apple will begin delivering the update via iTunes from 6pm. Demand will be heavy and it may prove wise to wait for a few hours before updating.
Apple will also be sending out an update for the new Apple TV, adding support for AirPlay video streaming.
