QuarkXPress 8.5 adds docx support

by Simon Aughton on November 17, 2010

Quark has added support for .docx Microsoft Word files, plus new Pantone libraries, in an update to QuarkXPress 8.

The new Word file format is the default for the latest Windows and now Mac versions of Microsoft Office, and the update provides both import and export support for .docx files.

The update also includes the update Pantone Plus colour libraries that were released earlier this year: Pantone+ CMYK, Pantone+ Color Bridge, Pantone+ Pastels & Neons (Coated & Uncoated) and Pantone+ Premium Metallics Chips (Coated).

Quark has also provided fixes for a number of problems with Snow Leopard compatibility, PDF export and Quark Publishing System integration with Job Jackets. It has also added an automatic update feature.

QuarkXPress 8.5 is a free update; Quark also provides a 60-day “Test Drive” version of the software.

Wasn’t 10.6 released in August last year? That’s some development cycle. Hope they don’t take as long with 10.7 next year. Poor effort really.

QuarkXPress 8.1 that was released in April 2009 and was already Snow Leopard ready i.e. prior to the release of Snow Leopard. We work extremely diligently to have early OS support although that support can never be finalised until Microsoft or Apple has released their final GM code versions. We subsequently released 8.1.2, 8.1.5, 8.1.6 and 8.1.6.2 since Snow Leopard started shipping. So on the contrary, QuarkXPress supported Snow Leopard extremely early – as in before it was released – and we’ve simply continued to enhance that support over the past year or more with 8.5 being the latest of those updates.
