Adobe previews new HTML5 tools

by Simon Aughton on October 29, 2010

Adobe has previewed two new tools for creating HTML5 content, including a tool that can convert Flash animations.

At it’s MAX conference, the company showed an early demonstration of a Flash-to-HTML5 converter which does precisely that, taking a Flash animation and exporting it as HTML5, or strictly speaking a combination of web standards: HTML5, SVG and CSS. Or as Photoshop product manager describes it, ““Flash stuff without Flash.”

Nack says that despite Adobe’s bluster and public spat with Apple over the lack of iOS support for Flash, the company values “pragmatism ahead of ideology”.

“Adobe lives or dies by its ability to help customers solve real problems. Flash is great for a lot of things, and it’s only improving. It’s not the only game in town, however, and Adobe makes its money selling tools, not giving away players.”

Indeed Adobe is now proving to be the leading developer of tools for generating HTML5 content. In the past six months it has introduced add-ons for Dreamweaver and Illustrator and a widget for embedding HTML5 video in web pages.

It has also previewed “Edge”, a prototype application for creating HTML5 animations and transitions from scratch.

Adobe has set no date for the release of public versions of the Flash-to-HTML5 converter or “Edge”.
